Ancient Roman City

Aquiliea - one of the largest cities of the ancient world, and I think the name of the guy who owns the Canucks? This once great city on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea was destroyed by Atilla the Hun and his barbarian hordes, and is now just a small town where anytime you dig under ground you come up with Roman stuff!  The most interesting thing about it to me is that the people who survived the destruction of the city fled to a collection of small, swampy islands in the lagoon and eked out a living as fishermen for awhile, but eventually built the city of Venice!

In front of the shopping mall - an ancient Roman Forum

The bell tower for the town's basilica

Though the basilica dates from the middle ages, it's tiled floor depicting scenes from the life of St. Peter is from the 300's.  1700 years old.

On the bus - on to Venice!
